Teeth Whitening: Professional or Take Home?
People want a bright Hollywood smile but which is the best way to achieve this smile, professional treatment or take home kit? Whether it’s a professional treatment or an over-the-counter kit the principle is the same. Both methods use a whitening agent that is applied to the teeth to bleach stains.
A professional whitening treatment is done ‘in house’ at the end of your cleaning. This allows the dental hygienist to clear the teeth of anything that may produce an uneven outcome. During a professional whitening treatment a laser light is often used to speed up, increase the whitening process, and cause less post whitening sensitivity.
Another option to brighten your smile would be a kit bought from your dentist, grocery store, or convenience store. An over-the-counter treatment can come in various forms such as; gels, trays, rinses, and strips. These options can be more convenient and at a more appealing cost.
While both can have the same brightness level, a professional treatment gives quicker satisfaction and takes away the fear of not doing the process correctly yourself. There are many things that can interfere with a successful outcome with an over-the-counter kit. It’s possible the whitening agent isn’t applied correctly or evenly, the teeth may not have been cleaned properly before bleaching, or an excess or lack of whitening agent isn’t applied to reach a desired outcome.
One of the most important things to remember when doing the whitening process in-house or at home is not to over bleach. Many are unaware of the permanent damage excessive whitening can do to their teeth and gums. When teeth are bleached excessively the edges of the teeth can turn an irreversibly bluish-translucent color. The teeth can become very sensitive and gum tissue can burn away. Remember, everything in moderation.
As you can see there are many options to have your teeth whitened. If you are unsure of which option is the best for you consult with your dentist.
