Strengthen Your Teeth

by | Oct 6, 2015 | General |

Are you prone to chipped teeth or simply want to put your teeth in good standing for when you are older?

First a look inside what teeth are made of. Teeth are made of enamel and dentin. Enamel is the hardest, white outer part of the tooth. It is mostly made of calcium phosphate, a rock hard mineral. Dentin is a layer underlying the enamel. It is made of living cells, which secrete a hard mineral substance.

Many often have the misconception that teeth are in fact bone. This is false. Teeth and bone are made up of similar minerals such as calcium and phosphorous but both have other minerals the other does not.

What can you eat or drink that will strengthen your teeth similar to eating certain foods to strengthen your bones?

Like bones, calcium and vitamin D help enhance the strength of teeth. Calcium helps strengthen the enamel of your teeth by preventing it from wearing out. Foods rich in calcium and vitamin D include dairy products like milk and cheese. Other foods that don’t immediately come to mind:

  • Celery
  • Animal protein or tofu
  • Sesame seeds
  • Egg yolk
  • Fish

These foods are packed full of nutrients for a strong teeth. A healthy diet does more than help with weight loss, every part of you wins even down to the teeth.
